CHAPTER 22

Kate threw herself to the ground taking Declan with her. She rolled over onto her back and reached for her gun. The parked car beside them acted as their only shield.

“Are you okay?” she asked through a hushed breath.

Declan patted himself down. “I’m good. You?”

Kate didn’t feel like she’d been shot but then again the adrenaline that coursed through her could be deceptive. She realized then they were still holding hands. Kate let go and checked herself over. “I think I’m okay.” Two more shots ricocheted off the building behind them.

They were pinned down behind the car, unsure of where the shots originated. There had been no car driving by at the time and Kate didn’t recall seeing anyone on the street with them. The buildings around them had been dark.

Declan got to his knees and crawled toward the back end of the car while Kate crawled to the front. “I don’t see anyone,” he said as another shot sailed over his head.

Kate leaned low to the ground and took her time scanning the area. She caught the glint of movement through one of the first floor windows in the building across the street.

“Two o’clock from your position. First floor,” Kate directed him. She had no idea if they’d get a shot off from where they both were on the ground. The only way would be to risk exposure. She couldn’t even be one hundred percent sure that the movement she saw was the person shooting.

“What do you want to do, Kate?”

Kate kept her eyes on the building while she reached for her phone. She fumbled it until she got it on the ground in front of her and called 911. They needed backup and to close off the area as soon as possible. Kate was worried for Declan and herself but she was more worried about the other diners still in the restaurant or who might round the corner and walk into gunfire.

As they remained there trying to decide the best course of action, three more shots hit the car, triggering the car alarm and flashing lights.

Then the shots stopped as quickly as they started.

Kate and Declan still didn’t have enough information to confidently get up off the ground or to take a shot in the direction of the building.

The wailing sirens from the D.C. Metro Police joined the grating sound of the car alarm. Kate and Declan shared a look and then slowly inched off the ground. With no further shots, Declan darted off across the road to the building with Kate right behind him.

They checked the front door of the building but found it locked. “I’m going around back,” he shouted and then took off in a sprint.

A man shouted from behind Kate and she turned sharply with her gun aimed at him. He dropped his keys on the ground as his hands shot up in the air. “I’m trying to shut off my car alarm,” he said with his eyes wide with fear.

Kate told him to keep his hands up.
